Muscadet is one of wine’s most familiar names—though long associated with inexpensive, mass-produced whites. Today, a new wave of ambitious growers is reshaping that perception, revealing Muscadet as a serious, terroir-driven wine. With its natural freshness, saline minerality, and a Chardonnay-like sensitivity to site, the best examples now echo the precision and depth of top Chablis rather than the styles of the past.

At the centre of this movement is Thomas Foubert of La Ferme des Confluences. In 2022, he took over 10 hectares of vineyards set on some of Muscadet’s finest terroirs, nestled between the Sèvre and Maine rivers.

Inspired by Burgundian principles, Thomas focuses on expressing terroir through thoughtful, hands-on viticulture. The vineyards are farmed organically, with much of the work done by hand. High-quality fruit allows for a minimalist approach in the cellar, using native yeast fermentations and low sulphur additions. The wines are aged on their lees in a variety of vessels, including concrete, stainless steel, fibreglass, and barrel.

Though still a young domaine, La Ferme des Confluences captures the energy and evolution of modern Muscadet. These wines balance vibrant, saline minerality with impressive depth and detail. The comparison to Chablis feels natural—and within that context, they offer outstanding value. For those drawn to mineral-driven whites, this is one of the Loire’s most compelling new names.
