DOMAINE ERIC DE SUREMAIN, CHÂTEAU DE MONTHELIE

Côte d'Or | Burgundy, France

a leader in sustainable viticulture

Adapting to Burgundy’s changing climate, Eric de Suremain joined his grandfather’s business in 1978, making wine in Monthelie (neighbouring Volnay and Meursault) and Rully--bringing “some Côte d’Or class to the appellation,” according to Jancis Robinson. Chateau de Monthelie was established in  1746  and today Eric de Suremain has been a leader in sustainable viticulture,  working with biodynamics since 1996.

Low yields, gentle extraction and extended aging make for cellar-worthy wines. De Suremain’s wines adapt to the growing challenges in a warming Burgundy, but still respect each climat’s traditions. “You have to know how to observe the earth to preserve a balance,” said De Suremain.

a master long overlooked in Burgundy

“Almost all the white grapes are sold on, so that Eric de Suremain [...] can concentrate on reds,” said Jasper Morris in Inside Burgundy. De Suremain has parcels in the top premier crus in his region including Les Preaux, Barbieres (part of Hauts Brins in Riottes), Romagiens. In Les Clou des Chênes and Sur la Velles, De Suremain owns half the vineyards.

“He wears shorts come hell or high water, hail, wind or rain,” according to UK importer Justerini & Brooks. “You only have to observe his soil-encrusted hands to realise that he spends his entire life in the vineyard.”

These wines are the labour of a master long overlooked in Burgundy with incredible value.
