little known region of cigales
Traslanzas was created in 1998, with an aim to make quality red wine in a little know region of Castilla y León, called DO Cigales. This region is famous for a unique rosé called clarete, which is made by co-fermenting red Tempranillo and white Albillo Mayor. Traslanzas wines are made by two women, Ana Martín and Maria Pinacho using grapes from Maria’s family vineyards in Mucientes, close to the region’s capital city Valladolid.
old vine Tempranillo
Their vineyards are dedicated to old vine Tempranillo (here it is called Tinto del País) planted in 1945. These old vines plus other factors associated with the unique terroir of the region result in Tempranillo with impressive concentration and finesse. Tempranillo sourced from their oldest vineyard sites is aged in a traditional underground cellar on the lees in oak barrels for at least 12 months, resulting in beautifully aged Tempranillos. Their wines are fermented with indigenous yeast, no fining or filtration takes place and minimal sulphur is added. Their red wines are impressive, but we love their clarete as well, it’s a serious rosé! We are honoured to represent Traslanzas and their finely crafted wines in the Ontario market.
Hailing from the Cigales DO in the Castilla y Leon region of Spain, this Saignée method rosé is made from 85% Tempranillo / 15% Albillo. The grapes are hand harvested from 30+ years old vineyards, destemmed, and fermented in stainless steel tanks including a 12 hour maceration. This unique strawberry-salmon coloured rosé has red fruits notes (strawberry and raspberry) along with mint tones and ripe stone fruits. It’s refreshing, and much like its white and red siblings, it has great structure and a long lasting aromatic finish.
