Dominio del Urogallo

asturias | green spain

intensity & passion

Dominio del Urogallo is a small estate in Asturias, on Spain’s northern coast by wine pioneer Francisco Asencio. He also makes wine in Bierzo and in the Sherry Triangle.  Francisco, who left a career in renewable energies to become a winemaker, has an intense personality and a willingness to produce the kind of wines he loves – refined, aromatic, and pure while respecting his local region and terroir. He cultivates the vineyards on steep slopes following biodynamic viticulture on soils made of slate, anthracite and quartz. He is passionate about this land and its potential in the wine world.

typical & atypical

Ascencio farms organically with biodynamic treatments and focuses on the local grape varieties of the region.  The vines are some of the oldest in Asturias and wine culture has been around for thousands of years. Because of the region’s high altitude and cold climate, reaching maturity can be tricky but Francisco likes a challenge and his passion and determination shines through in his wines.

As you would expect from winemakers who believe their wine is made in the vineyard, Francisco’s wines carry all the earmarks of organic and biodynamic winemaking: manual work, minimal intervention, indigenous yeast & bacteria, and no added sulfites. What you wouldn’t typically expect are the characteristics that make these wines uniquely delicious and categorically atypical of wines from this region: pristine elegance and lean finesse. We are truly pleased to be carrying these joyful wines in our portfolio!
